Pitt County Educational Foundation Scholarships
(Pitt County Schools graduating seniors may apply) Almire Major Smith Scholarship This scholarship was established by the grandchildren of Mr. Almire Smith to honor his legacy and further champion his support for higher education. Mr. Smith served in World War II, worked for East Carolina University as Housekeeping Supervisor, and was an avid supporter of his church and community. Mr. Smith was a proud father of eight, who ensured his children achieved the education he didn't, by motivating them to go on to colleges and universities throughout North Carolina. The grandchildren would like to continue this tradition by bestowing an annual scholarship to an African American attending a community college of college/university in North Carolina. This individual must show support for community service, and educational prowess. ROTC membership is preferred but not a qualification. Bill Grimm Scholarship This scholarship was established by the family and friends in honor and memory of Bill's 40 years of service to sports medicine. The scholarship also recognizes his 18 years of dedication to Pitt County Schools and North Carolina Athletics. The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who plans a career in sports medicine. Frank Richardson Sells III Memorial Scholarship The Frank Richardson Sells III Scholarship was established by his mom, Cooka Sells, his sister, Anna Sells, and dear family and friends to honor his memory. This scholarship is awarded annually to a J.H. Rose senior who will be attending a technical college. Richardson was our “technical boy” who enjoyed doing things with his hands and always helping others. He became a volunteer firefighter and felt very honored to be able to help people in his community. Richardson was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. He felt such comfort and love while spending time with his family and friends. James J. and Mamie R. Perkins Health Professions Scholarships Through the generosity of the Perkins Trust Committee, Pitt County Schools’ students have received heath scholarships to further their education at East Carolina University and Pitt Community College. Each year a four-year scholarship to ECU and a two-year scholarship to PCC are awarded to two Pitt County High School Seniors. The recipients pledge to remain employed in ECU Health or another health care agency in Pitt County for the number of years of their scholarship. Michael Bonner Scholarship The Michael Bonner Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a deserving high school senior who attended South Greenville Elementary during their primary years. This individual must plan to pursue an education at a community college or the university level. Mr. Bonner is a teacher, an entrepreneur, author, investor, and notable keynote speaker. In the past 4 years he has spoken at over 200 speeches emphasizing the importance of bringing innovation, inclusion, and entrepreneurship to the current education system. One of his defining moments occurred in 2017 when he was a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show. That magical moment is the foundation for this scholarship. Anybody can go viral in this digital age, but the mission should be to build something that will help open doors for others. This award will be given in the amount of $1,000. The award will be paid directly to the financial department at the institution where the student chooses to attend. Nancy B. Wynne Scholarship In 1994, the family and friends of the late Nancy B. Wynne established a scholarship in her memory. Ms. Wynne was a dedicated and committed science teacher at J. H. Rose High School. Each year a student at J. H Rose who is planning a career in a science field is selected to receive the scholarship. This year (2021) the scholarship is open to any Pitt County Schools graduating senior. Parker-Jernigan Scholarship The Parker-Jernigan Scholarship is given by the children of Earl and Betty Parker of Gates County, NC. THis $30,000 ($7,500 per year for four years) is given to a PCS student that is highky motivated with academics, employment, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. The recipient must demonstrated interest in Health Science or Business Career path. PCS Educator Fellow Scholarship The vision of Pitt County Schools is to inspire and motivate all learners by providing educational opportunities that engage, empower and elevate students to lead healthy, resourceful and responsible lives. PCS is providing the opportunity for 4 local PCS Educator Fellows to be awarded up to $20,000 ($5,000 a year) in scholarships to become a teacher. Scholarship recipients must commit to 4 years as a PCS classroom teacher after graduation. |
